Summer Camp

An Energetic Ministry Bringing Hope to Grieving Children

About Summer Camp

Camp Agape’s Summer Camp Program is a bereavement camp where children are guided through a therapeutic healing process. The unique and innovative faith-based program includes the exciting activities a typical summer camp offers with added group-therapy activities that incorporate art, music, games, and play therapy. Summer Camp is designed to help the children understand their feelings, process their emotions, and find new ways to cope with the death of their loved one—all with the central theme of offering true hope for their future.

Summer Camp offers a way to connect children who have lost loved ones with other children who are experiencing the same thing. They are free to share their feelings, thoughts, and experiences with one another. In this safe and supportive environment, children gain a sense of belonging and learn they are not alone in their grief.

Frequently Asked Questions

What age groups does Summer Camp serve?

Camp Agape’s Summer Camp Program serves children ages 7 to 12.

What qualifies a child to be considered for the Summer Camp Program?

In order to qualify for Summer Camp and to successfully participate in camp therapy activities, children will need to recall specific emotions and memories of the lost loved one. For this reason, the child’s loss must be recent (within three years or less for younger campers).

Where is the Summer Camp Program held?

Camp Agape Summer Camp is held at Camp Capers. Camp Capers is located in central Texas, seven miles outside of Comfort. Learn more about Camp Capers.

Does the Summer Camp Program serve children with disabilities?

Camp Agape is not equipped to serve children with developmental and physical needs. However, we can offer references to other camp programs that support the special needs of children with developmental and physical disabilities.

How are campers grouped?

Campers are organized into four groups:

Green Machine: Boys 7-9

Blue Crew: Boys 10-12

Sunshine Girls: Girls 7-9

Red Rubies: Girls 10-12

Who will help guide my child through the Summer Camp Program?

Campers are guided through the program by their Buddy, an adult volunteer who is trained to support them throughout Summer Camp. Each Buddy/Camper pair is prayerfully matched by the Camp Agape Team. Buddies, like their camper, have also experienced loss in their own lives. They participate in each activity with their assigned camper, echoing the program theme, “You are not alone.”

Each camper group is assigned at least one Assistant Buddy, who circulates and assists each Camper/Buddy pair as needed.

Each camper group is led by a Grief Coach who facilitates activities, observes the children, and assists in guiding them through sharing their thoughts and processing their emotions.

Camp Agape’s  Spiritual Leader and Prayer Team offer faith-based assistance when needed.

How many campers attend Summer Camp?

Camp Agape Summer Camp serves up to fifty children. Spots are extremely limited due to cabin and bed availability.

How much does it cost for a camper to attend Summer Camp?

Thanks to special donors and fundraising efforts, all of Camp Agape’s programs are free to attendees. A $100 deposit per child is required to apply for the Summer Camp program. If you need financial assistance with a deposit, scholarships may be requested.

Once a camper is dropped off at Summer Camp, the deposit is returned. Some guardians elect to donate their deposits back to Camp Agape in support of our ministry.

Can I volunteer at Summer Camp if I have a child attending?

It is not recommended that parents, guardians, or other family members volunteer to serve at a program if they have a child in attendance. This can be distracting from the healing process and can hinder bonding with their Buddy.
