Summer Camp

An Energetic Ministry Bringing Hope to Grieving Children

Camp Agape’s Summer Camp Program is a bereavement camp that guides children through a therapeutic healing process. Our unique and innovative faith-based program offers exciting activities like fishing, swimming, s’mores, equine therapy, crafts, and more. In addition to traditional summer camp activities, we incorporate group therapy activities such as art, music, games, and play therapy. Summer Camp helps children understand their feelings, process their emotions, and find new ways to cope with the death of their loved ones. Our central theme is offering true hope for their future.

Summer Camp allows children who have lost loved ones to connect with others who share similar experiences. In a safe and supportive environment, children can freely share their feelings, thoughts, and experiences, fostering a sense of belonging and letting them know they are not alone in their grief.

Activities

Camp Agape utilizes various activities and play therapy to facilitate transition and growth. Our activities include fishing, swimming, s’mores, horseback riding, crafts, grief coaching, honoring, candle lighting, healing, and play therapy.

Camp Agape’s Summer Camp Program serves children aged 7 to 12.

To qualify for Summer Camp and actively take part in therapeutic activities, children need to have significant memories of their deceased loved one and be able to express their emotions related to the loss. For this reason, the child’s loss must be within three years or less for younger campers.

Summer Camp is held at Camp Capers, located in central Texas, seven miles outside Comfort. (Learn more about Camp Capers here).

Camp Agape is not equipped to serve children with developmental and physical needs. However, we can reference other camp programs that support the unique needs of children with these disabilities.

Campers are organized into four groups based on age and gender:

Green Machine: Boys aged 7-9

Blue Crew: Boys aged 10-12

Sunshine Girls: Girls aged 7-9

Red Rubies: Girls aged 10-12

Campers are paired with a Buddy, an adult volunteer trained to support them throughout Summer Camp. The Camp Agape Team prayerfully matches each buddy/camper pair. Buddies have also experienced loss and participated in each activity with their assigned camper, echoing the program theme, “You are not alone.”

Each camper group has at least one Assistant Buddy who assists the Camper/Buddy pairs as needed. A Grief Coach leads each camper group, facilitating activities, observing the children, and guiding them through sharing their thoughts and processing their emotions. Camp Agape’s Spiritual Leader and Prayer Team offer faith-based assistance when needed.

Camp Agape Summer Camp can accommodate up to forty children. However, due to cabin and bed availability, spots are minimal.

Thanks to our unique donors and fundraising efforts, all Camp Agape’s programs are free for attendees. However, a $100 deposit is required to apply for the Summer Camp program.

You can request a scholarship if you need financial assistance with the deposit. The deposit is returned once a camper is dropped off at Summer Camp. Some guardians donate their deposits to Camp Agape to support our ministry.

We recommend that parents, guardians, and other family members do not volunteer if their child attends Summer Camp. This helps prevent distraction from the healing process and allows for better bonding between campers and their Buddies.
